Green Number Plates update

David Edwards

Updated: Sep 23, 2020

As part of the government’s Road to Zero strategy to lead the world in zero emission vehicle technology, green number plates will shortly be coming to UK roads.

Announced in June 2020 by Transport Secretary Grant Schapps, green plates were planned to be rolled out from this autumn, 2020.

At the time of writing (22.09.2020), there are no confirmed details for the construction and design of green number plates and no legislation is currently in place to allow their use. We await details from DVLA.

The idea behind green plates is to make it easier for Zero Emission (ZE) vehicles to be identified and to give the strategy a higher public profile, potentially giving ZE drivers benefits such as free parking and the ability to use congestion zones or bus lanes for free.

We will continue to update you on further changes in the future.
