Grant Schapps, the Transport Secretary, has announced that Green Number Plates will be coming to the UK as soon as Autumn of 2020.
Available for zero emission vehicles only, these plates will be identifiable by a green flash on the left hand side (as shown below).
Green number plates have been introduced to help encourage drivers to switch to electric vehicles as part of the government's plan to achieve net zero emissions by the year 2050.
The Transport Secretary has said:
“Green number plates could unlock a number of incentives for drivers and increase awareness of cleaner vehicles on our roads, showing people that a greener transport future is within our grasp”
The Government has also announced £12 Million in funding for ground-breaking research into the zero emissions market, to further accelerate their plan to drive green recovery.
